The festival is over and all the artists have left Edmonton. It is really quiet in the gallery--a little eerie. Todd, Josh and I sit in the kitchen and catch up on emails. I try to correct some travel plans. If all goes as planned, I depart on Wednesday.
I will post an epilogue on the blog after I have had a week to reflect on the events some more. (I encourage those of you who want to post more comments on the blog to please feel free to do so!).

Hi all. I've just gota few minutes before waking my son and get him ready for school. As I was waiting for Todd to pick me up at the gallery to go to ther airport I noticed tiny pieces of parachute-like fluff floating around me in space. I chased one and caught it for further inspection. Each parachute held a tiny seed. On the airplane I looked down at my lap and two of the seeds had stuck to the fabric of my pants. We are swapping seeds and pollen all accross Canada without even realizing it. I think of biodiversity and cross-pollination as strong metaphors for the way we have been able to be enriched and inspired by the festival.
I'm not sure about the parasite metaphor. It has very negative connotations, and bears further research with concrete examples from the varied types of parasitical relationships in nature. If you write it like this: "para/site" you could say it is a shortened form of parallel sites, which is how I see the blogs branching off or sprouting up from festival.
More on this later!
Sorry, that was me^, Lori W. speaking.
hi tagny,
wanted to let you know i really enjoyed your blog...great writing, lots of things to think about...
and just to add about the parasite...i think you might have meant commensal: a relation between organisms in which one derives benefits (e,g, food or protection) without harming or benefiting the other. the parasite on the other hand often causes death or damage to its host...
also, are you planning to write more about nicoles intervention? i feel i don't really know what your response was to her piece.
thank you so much, tagny and all the artists in sharing your work in this immediate way. as i was sharing with irene, i haven't felt this engaged in thinking about performance work for a long, long time. and for that i thank you. (cuz i really enjoy thinking about performance work...)
all my love
karen
coming home to the blog made me feel like i was still having an ongoing conversation with all of you even though i am not face to face with you right now. it made me feel a little less "homesick" for edmonton.
i really appreciate being able to go over and over my thoughts and to have your thoughts here tagny because it makes me feel very connected.
i am missing those connections right now.
I am thinking of you all. Images and gestures resonate in my memory. As I lift the head of a drowsy peony, as I put my head in the drunken blossoms of the laburnum tree, as the bumble bees stumble comically in their search for nectar. As my eyes search in vacant lots for a good place to dine, as I read about the creeks and rivers hidden under concrete. As I fry up my perogies and sprinkle them with the purple chive blossoms from my garden. As I long for my own personal security guard for safe walks in the woods. As I marvel at the biodiversity of lipsticks, assured that no harm came to creatures for the benefit of beauty. As I see the beauty in beige. As my heart spills over with some of the emotions in the messages I carried home in my suitcases, bulging with pollen and honey to heal this aching heart of mine, which is kindred to and and resonant with all aching hearts in the city blocks and country miles.
I think its great that we can keep using this blog for this after thoughts. Thanks for the idea Lori.
So I wanted to quickly address the point that Lori and Karen have brought up about the use of the parasite as metaphor. For me, the parasite or parasitic relations imply a symbiotic and regenerative interrelation through mutualism. I reference the term "mutualism" in the post " Digital and urban Para-sites. What I mean is that a parasitic relation can function between diverse species and an exchange og nutrients, or life processes, can benefit not just one but many species. Even though there is a negative conotation implied around the term "parasite" and "parasitic relations" in popular culture (ie horror films come to mind) , the reality is that such relations are necessary for evolutionary process of life.
Also, I am not usiing the notion of parasitic relations s a metaphor. I see these process hapenning in life--I am not using it as an analogy. HUmans and electornic systems also operate and function in parasitic ways because they are part of life processes.
I could go on. I find the whole discussion fascinating and would love to continue this. I am going to SymbioticA, an art and science laboratory, to conduct an artist residency where I will be researching parasitic and viral relations. I am particularly interested in how these relations problematize the notion of live art and liveness.
Here's a good one; Defensive Symbiosis http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/course/
ent525/close/shannon.html,
as in the relationship between ants and aphids. Ants milk aphids in return for protecting them from preditors. We had an aphid/ant farm on a strawberry plant last summer, so you could see this in action. Fascinating. The relationship between a bumble bee and a flower is symbiotic. The flowers and polinators evolve together for each other in the same environment. It is a dynamic adaptive realtionship.
Your work sounds very intersting Tagny, keep us posted.
This would also be a good space to give each other the heads up whenever we update our blogs. I still have some photos to post on mine, but I do have some new entries there now.
Sweetness and light to you all!
Hi all,
I am happy to see that the relation continues beyond the residency and am trying my darndist to keep up. I have yet to post the trajectories that have been born of this process. I will keep everyone posted when it happens. I have steped back into the chaos of the everyday and miss the focus that Visualeyez offerd to us all. I hope this finds everyone well and look forward to hearing about all the parasitic relations that occur and multiply through our encounters.
Soon. E.
